EMPOWERED BY SUPPORT
"I work on a department, and I look forward to clocking in here. Because I know, like, alright, I know everyone here. Everyone here is really nice. I have a good bond. At the department, it's kind of different every day. So here it's like, I know I have like a safe space to come, like, work."

"Concerts, that's my number one thing. Blink-182, Foo Fighters, Pierce the Veil, and then it switches to the rap side of things like Tyler, the Creator.

ADAPTING AND THRIVING
"I remember the first few months I was here, I was like, I don’t know how this is gonna be, like, testing the waters out. And I just got more and more conditioned to it."
Sophia Smith
EMT, Akron
If you ever find yourself in an emergency, Sophia is exactly the kind of person you’d want rushing to your aid. At just 19, she’s already making waves as an EMT with Donald Martens & Sons, proving that passion and skill have nothing to do with age. Growing up in a family of first responders—her dad an EMT, her mom a former sheriff—she was basically built for this life. But she didn’t just follow in their footsteps; she sprinted ahead. In high school, she took first place in state and national EMT competitions, which pretty much sealed the deal for her career path. Fast forward to today, and she’s a trusted part of the Martens team, known for her quick thinking, cool head, and ability to crack a joke even in the most stressful situations.
But there’s more to Sophia than sirens and stretchers. When she’s off duty, you’ll likely find her deep into a Call of Duty session, rewatching The Last of Us, or getting hyped for her next concert. Her music taste? All over the place—in the best way. One night she’s rocking out to Blink-182 or Foo Fighters, the next she’s vibing to Tyler, the Creator. She’s also a big fan of horror movies, the cornier, the better. If it’s got bad special effects and questionable plotlines, she’s in.
What really makes Sophia stand out, though, is her attitude. She’s got this perfect mix of confidence, humility, and humor that makes her a natural in both her job and her friendships. Whether she’s saving lives, cracking jokes with her work bestie Deanna, or schooling her brother in video games (even when she doesn’t know what she’s doing), Sophia brings her whole self to everything she does. She’s not just good at her job—she loves it. And if you ask her how long she plans to stick around at Donald Martens? Her answer is simple: “Unless I have a really good reason to leave, I’m not going anywhere.”
